Tips for A BETTER MOVE
- Moving Boxes. Good places for free boxes are fast food chains, supermarkets, liquor stores, Ensure boxes are not too big but are strong and can be sealed. Alternatively, purchase them at your nearest Self Storage facility.
- Empty wardrobes and drawers. Remove breakable, loose and heavy items from chests of drawers. Light clothing may remain. As a general rule, furniture with doors should be emptied.
- Safety first. Equipment such as lawnmowers must be empty of fuel before they can be carried. Gas bottles are not carried in the removal van.
- Packing of boxes. Pack items into appropriate size boxes, seal them and clearly mark where they are to go in your new home.
- Heavy items in smaller boxes, lighter items in the larger boxes
- Reduce the number of items. Move small items yourself to reduce moving time. The number of items, and consequently trips to the truck, can be reduced by tying loose items (brooms, mops etc) into manageable bundles. Leave drawers in dressers.
- Shorten the distance travelled. Each trip to the truck takes time. Have pre-packed small and/or light items near where the truck will be parked.
- Dismantling. Where possible dismantle beds and other furniture items before the truck arrives. Remember: Keep all screws and bolts in bags, taped to the bed or item of furniture.
- Pot Plants. If transporting pot plants, do not water them for a few days prior to the move.
- Pack an "Essentials Box". An Essentials Box consists of necessary items that should go in your car and not the moving van eg: Keys to both old & new houses; Mobile phone; bathroom essentials; eating utensils, cups; kettle, tea, coffee etc; torch, matches candles; money & ID, credit cards etc; medications.
